If you’re new to 3D printing (or just curious about what your Parker3D order’s made from), you might’ve seen us mention materials like PLA, PETG, and TPU. But what exactly are they — and what makes them different? Let’s break it down in plain English 👌

📦 PLA (Polylactic Acid)

PLA is the most popular material for 3D printing, and it’s what we use for most of our products. It’s made from natural sources like corn starch or sugarcane, making it an eco-friendlier option.

Why we love it: ✅ Great surface finish ✅ Wide range of colours and effects (like silk, glitter, transparent and rainbow!) ✅ Ideal for decorative items, wedding favours, toys, and home décor

Things to know: ❌ Not the best for outdoor or high-temperature use — it can warp in heat

💪 PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol)

PETG is tougher and more durable than PLA. It’s still fairly easy to print with but has added flexibility and is better for items that need to handle a bit more wear and tear.

Why we love it: ✅ Stronger than PLA ✅ Good resistance to moisture and heat ✅ Great for functional parts and practical prints

Things to know: ❌ Limited specialty colours compared to PLA

🌀 TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane)

TPU is a flexible, rubbery material — perfect for printing squishy, bendy, or shock-absorbing items. We use this for things like fidget toys, phone holders, or anything you want to flex and squeeze!

Why we love it: ✅ Super flexible and bendy ✅ Durable and resistant to wear ✅ Fun for interactive designs

Things to know: ❌ Not as easy to print with as PLA — takes longer and needs a little more care

🌞 ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate)

ASA is a high-performance material similar to ABS but with better UV and weather resistance, making it a solid choice for outdoor prints. It’s strong, durable, and less likely to fade or crack in the sun.

Why we love it: ✅ Excellent UV and weather resistance ✅ Tough and durable like ABS ✅ Great for outdoor signs, garden décor, and functional parts

Things to know: ❌ Requires higher print temperatures and a controlled print environment

❌ Limited colour options compared to PLA

🎨 Colour & Finish Options

The best part? All of these materials come in a wide range of colours and finishes — from solid mattes to shimmering silks, sparkly glitter, and clear transparent filaments. Don’t see your perfect colour? No worries — we’re always happy to source the closest possible match for you!

💡 Which Material is Right for Your Print?

It depends on what you’re making!

  • Decorative and personalised items? Go with PLA

  • Functional, durable parts? Choose PETG

  • Squishy, flexible things? TPU’s your best bet

  • External use? Choose ASA

Still unsure? Drop us a message — we’re always happy to help guide you to the best option for your idea.
